One light practice: part 1

By Paul | May 13, 2008

Couple weeks ago I came across a website of Zack Arias who teaches One Light Workshops. Zack is well known as a master of the one light technique. He simply uses one light source to lit his subject with combination of available light. Of course he knows other creative ways to use studio strobes and portable flashlights, but his simple approach and minimum gear earned him “One Light Guru” title.

Today I decided to try this new technique, especially when I saw beautiful sunset outside. I grabbed the camera and one speedlite and I rushed in front of our house to set it up. I asked Ania to pose for me so I could take couple test shots.

The light was changing really fast and I had to make a lot of adjustments on the fly. I know that for some photographers it’s a “piece of cake”, but I was always that guy who liked available light and hated strobes. Well, after I saw what can be achieved when you use strobes properly (thank you Zack!), my attitude will definitely change. I just need to practice more ;-).

Here’s my first attempt.
