One Light practice: part 3
By Paul | May 16, 2008
I know I’ve been posting a lot of “One Light” series recently, but I’m really interested in perfecting this technique. I’m just a little bit afraid my wife will soon get tired of modeling for me almost every day :-).
That’s why this time I decided to take Ania and Kuba to the nearby Forest Preserve to change environment and spend some time together. We’ve been living here for about 4 years and only this year we started really exploring this place. We often bike there and Ania likes to jog in the forest. The park also have some cool places for photographers. I’m sure we will explore a few interesting spots this summer.
Here’s a few of my favorite pictures from that evening.

One Light practice: part 2
By Paul | May 15, 2008
This is my second attempt to use one light source together with available light at sunset. Today we had great colors. I couldn’t resist. Again, I grabbed the camera, my stand was already set up in the garage with hot shoe adapter installed. I put my Canon Speedlite with CTO (Color Temperature Orange) gel on it and started playing with exposure. When I was ready to shoot, I asked Ania to bring Kuba and”add some beauty to the frame”. My neighbor Lukas was outside enjoying the views as well, so I took couple shots of him and his cool dog Coco.
My favorite shots from that evening:

I really like the expression on Kuba’s face: “Hmmmm, shall I give him a low five or not”?

Olivia and Kuba - play date
By Paul | May 14, 2008
Here are a few shots of Kuba and Olivia from last week. We’ve set up another play date for kids so they can spend some time together and leave us alone… for a while ;-).
Of course it was another chance for me to chase the kids with a camera and capture couple moments in harsh, midday light. Enjoy.

One light practice: part 1
By Paul | May 13, 2008
Couple weeks ago I came across a website of Zack Arias who teaches One Light Workshops. Zack is well known as a master of the one light technique. He simply uses one light source to lit his subject with combination of available light. Of course he knows other creative ways to use studio strobes and portable flashlights, but his simple approach and minimum gear earned him “One Light Guru” title.
Today I decided to try this new technique, especially when I saw beautiful sunset outside. I grabbed the camera and one speedlite and I rushed in front of our house to set it up. I asked Ania to pose for me so I could take couple test shots.
The light was changing really fast and I had to make a lot of adjustments on the fly. I know that for some photographers it’s a “piece of cake”, but I was always that guy who liked available light and hated strobes. Well, after I saw what can be achieved when you use strobes properly (thank you Zack!), my attitude will definitely change. I just need to practice more ;-).
Here’s my first attempt.

A day on the beach
By Paul | May 4, 2008
Today we escaped from suburbs of Chicago to spend a day on the beach. Our friends: John with his little daughter Ava and Justina joined us there. I was going to photograph kiteboarders at the Evanston Beach, but the event was canceled.
We drove down to Montrose Beach instead where they usually hang out, but today the beach was empty. I was suprised. It was a perfect day for kiteboarding.
Anyway, we had a great time and I was able to photograph my family and friends. They are my most reliable and loyal models :-).
Here are couple pictures from that day.
